Review: Fallout: New Vegas DLC Dead Money and Honest Hearts

Bethesda has followed the model of Fallout 3 and released several packs of DLC for their game, Fallout: New Vegas. Two pieces of DLC are available right now with a third coming later in June. The first two pieces of DLC are entitled Dead Money and Honest Hearts. They are both interesting quests that expand on ideas and characters that were mentioned but never seen in the main game.

Dead Money has the courier responding to an invitation to the grand opening of the Sierra Madre Casino. Once there the courier is taken hostage by “Father Eli” (the brotherhood elder who disappeared after the Helios 1 battle) and sent on several missions to prepare the way for the opening of the casino. The courier is stripped of all his personal belongings and equipped with an explosive slave collar to keep him from running off. The collar proves to be an issue though as pre-war security sirens will set off the collar if the courier gets too close. These sirens will need to be destroyed or bypassed.

The local bad guys have the annoying ability to regenerate if they aren’t mutilated after they are killed. The courier will need to hack off a limb quickly after killing the bad guys to keep him out of commission. The enemies can be annoying to kill at first but once you get the hang of it it becomes routine. The story takes the courier to some interesting places and there are several ways to complete the tasks just like any good Fallout story.

Honest Hearts is a little bit like the Point Lookout DLC from Fallout 3, in that the courier doesn’t get captured or pressed into service in a small locale. The courier accepts an invitation to join the Happy Trails Caravan into Utah to try and re-establish contact with New Canaan. The courier will need to have 75 pounds or less to start the quest (100 pounds if he has the strong back perk) The DLC takes the courier to Zion National Park in Utah where the caravan is ambushed and the courier is the only surviving member. The courier is then led to the camp of the Dead Horses, a local tribe, and their leader, Joshua Graham. If you remember from the game Joshua Graham was Caesar’s first legate who he had set on fire and thrown into the Grand Canyon after the Legion’s defeat at Hoover Dam.

The story allows you to align with one of two forces, both trying to protect the tribes of Zion from the invading White Legs who are attempting to join Caesar’s Legion. There are a lot of goodies to find including a Thompson (just like the M1 Garand in the main game it’s not called a Thompson or a Tommy gun) and a yao guai gauntlet. The story is interesting and the quests are fun to play through.

These two pieces of DLC have done well to further explain ideas from the main game, one thing that the Fallout 3 DLC didn’t really do. The loot is considerable for both of the DLC packs and the storyline and quests are strong. If you liked the main game then you will enjoy these new DLC packs. My only real problem with the DLC is that they don’t extend the game after the ending (a la Broken Steel) and future DLC won’t either, according to Bethesda.
